Time to Take Action – Understanding "Exercise" and Option Styles

In our previous steps, we talked about how a "Click Ticket" (an option) gives you the right to buy or sell something.

When you finally decide to use that right, it is called "Exercising" the option.

• Exercising a Call Option: You are officially telling the market, "I am using my right to BUY the Bitcoin at my locked-in Strike Price."

• Exercising a Put Option: You are officially telling the market, "I am using my right to SELL the Bitcoin at my locked-in Strike Price."

But when are you actually allowed to do this? That depends entirely on the "style" of the option you bought. In the trading world, there are two main styles: American and European.

The "Gift Card" Approach: American Style Options

American style options are very flexible. They can be exercised at any time before the expiration date. Think of them like a store gift card, you can use it today, tomorrow, or right before it expires.

Let’s look at a historical example. Imagine it was the year 2021, and you held an American-style Call option for Bitcoin with a Strike Price of $40,000. Suddenly, the market goes crazy and Bitcoin shoots up to $60,000. Because it is an American option, you could "exercise" your right that very same afternoon. You buy the Bitcoin for $40,000, instantly saving yourself $20,000 per coin compared to the current market price.

The "Concert Ticket" Approach: European Style Options

European style options are a bit stricter. They can ONLY be exercised at the exact moment they expire. Think of them like a ticket to a concert on a Friday night; you can't show up on Wednesday and demand to see the band.

Let's look at a modern example using our current market. Fast forward to 2026 on ClickOptions, where we primarily trade European-style crypto options.

Imagine you hold a European Call option for Bitcoin with a Strike Price of $85,000, and the expiration date is still a month away. Suddenly, Bitcoin has a massive week and jumps to $100,000. You are sitting on a great trade! But because it is a European option, you cannot exercise it today to buy the Bitcoin at $85,000. You have to wait until expiration day.

The Million Dollar Question: Are You Trapped?

This is the most common question from new traders: "Why would I ever trade a European option on ClickOptions if I am forced to wait and the price might drop back down?"

Here is the secret: You are not forced to hold it. While you cannot exercise the option early, you can simply sell the option contract itself to someone else. This instantly closes your position and banks your profit.

In fact, selling the contract early usually makes you more money than exercising it anyway! Let's go back to our 2026 example. Bitcoin is at $100,000, and your Strike Price is $85,000. The raw difference is $15,000. But because there is still a month left before expiration, other traders will pay a premium for the "time" left on the clock.

Instead of just getting $15,000, you might be able to sell your ClickOptions contract to another trader for $17,000. That extra $2,000 is called "Extrinsic Value" (think of it as a time-and-hype bonus). We will study extrinsic value in detail later in the course, but just know that it works highly in your favor!

Quick Recap

• Exercising means using your contract to buy or sell the actual asset.

• American Options can be exercised anytime before expiration.

• European Options (the standard for crypto on platforms like ClickOptions) can only be exercised at expiration.

• Closing a Position is different from exercising! With both American and European options, you can freely buy and sell the contracts themselves at any time to lock in your profits before the expiration date.
