How to Calculate Your Profit and Loss (The Easy Way)

How to Calculate Your Profit and Loss (The Easy Way)

In this lesson, we will walk through exactly how to calculate your profit or loss when you buy a "Right to Buy" ticket on ClickOptions. For simplicity, we are going to ignore small trading fees in these examples.

Scenario A: Cashing In Early

There is a massive misconception in the trading world. Many people think that once you buy a ticket with an expiration date, you are forced to wait until that date to see your money.

This is completely false. On ClickOptions, you are free to sell your ticket to another trader at any time before the deadline. If the market moves in your favor early, you can cash out instantly.

Let’s look at a simple example using Bitcoin (BTC). Remember, on ClickOptions, the multiplier is exactly 1 (1 ticket controls 1 Bitcoin).

Example 1: Cashing out for a quick win

  • You buy a "Right to Buy" ticket for Bitcoin. Your locked-in target price is $85,000.
  • The upfront fee you pay for this ticket is $1,000.
  • Two days later, Bitcoin goes on a massive run. Because the market is hot, the value of your ticket jumps from $1,000 to $4,000.
  • You decide you don't want to wait for the deadline. You click "Sell" and close your position right now.

How much profit did you make? The math is incredibly simple: $4,000 (What you sold it for) - $1,000 (What you bought it for) = $3,000 Profit.

Because you closed your position early, we don't even care what the price of Bitcoin is on the expiration date. You took your profit and walked away!

Scenario B: Holding to the Deadline

Now let's look at what happens if you decide to hold your ticket until the exact moment it expires.

When your ticket expires, its value is based purely on the difference between the actual market price of Bitcoin and your locked-in target price.

Let's use our same example: You bought a ticket with an $85,000 target price, and you paid a $1,000 fee for it.

Example 2: A Massive Win

  • Today is the deadline. The actual price of Bitcoin has skyrocketed to $90,000.
  • You use your ticket to buy at your $85,000 locked-in price.
  • You instantly save $5,000 compared to the current market.
  • Your Profit: $5,000 (Your savings) - $1,000 (Your original ticket fee) = $4,000 Total Profit.

Example 3: A Small Loss

  • Today is the deadline. The actual price of Bitcoin is $85,500.
  • You use your ticket to buy at $85,000.
  • You save $500 compared to the current market.
  • Your Loss: You saved $500, but you paid $1,000 for the ticket. $500 - $1,000 = -$500 Total Loss.
  • Notice that even though Bitcoin went up, it didn't go up enough to cover the cost of your ticket.

Example 4: Total Protection from a Crash

  • Today is the deadline. The entire crypto market has crashed, and Bitcoin is down to $50,000.
  • Do you use your ticket to buy at $85,000? Absolutely not! You simply throw the ticket in the trash.
  • Your Loss: You only lose the original $1,000 fee you paid. Even though Bitcoin dropped by tens of thousands of dollars, your risk was totally capped.

In Summary

  • Your risk is fixed. When you buy a ticket, the absolute most you can ever lose is the small upfront fee you paid.
  • You are in control. You can sell your ticket early to lock in profits, or hold it to the deadline for a massive payout.
  • The math is simple. Profit = (Your Savings) - (Your Ticket Fee).
